Albany, Ga. – The Albany State women's soccer team battled tough but ultimately fell 2-0 to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday evening at the Albany State Soccer Complex. With the loss, the Lady Golden Rams drop to 1-6 overall (0-4 PBC), while the Hurricanes improve to 4-4-1 (1-2-1 PBC).
The Hurricanes struck early, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute when Sydney Weslowski capitalized on an assist from Toni Clark to give GSW a 1-0 lead. Albany State's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Leire Rodriguez Najera, kept the Golden Rams within striking distance. Rodriguez Najera delivered a stellar performance, recording 12 saves and keeping ASU in the match against a relentless GSW attack that tallied 39 total shots.
Despite a strong defensive showing, the Hurricanes doubled their advantage in the 65th minute when Ella Moody netted a goal off an assist from Weslowski, sealing the 2-0 final. Offensively, Albany State created chances of their own with
Jordyn Keene,
Aixa Barrera,
Gabby Toney,
Adjoa Mensah, and
Nelia Dailey each testing the GSW defense with shots on goal.
The Lady Golden Rams showed determination throughout the contest, pushing forward in the second half but unable to break through against GSW goalkeeper Bella Morey, who earned the shutout.
Up next, Albany State will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for a non-conference matchup against Edward Waters on Saturday, October 4, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
