Tigers Use 3-Late Runs, Slip Past Lady Rams

ALBANY, Ga. – The Golden Rams wrapped up league play in a tough ending. Edward Waters broke a deadlock with a 3-run seventh frame and slipped past Albany State, 7-5, in a softball makeup contest.

In a battle of two of the SIAC East's best clubs, the Tigers (36-14/18-5 SIAC East) saw their first two hitters reach base on a single and a walk and a second walk loaded the bases with one out. Edward Waters received a sac fly for one run and a two-run double push it ahead, 7-4. Keyatta Ayers and Romona McLeod led off the home seventh with singles before Trista Murphy hit into a fielder's choice. Mogan Brown lofted a sac fly and plated Ayers, but ASU (28-16/16-8 SIAC East) had its next batter fly out to end the day.

The Lady Ram top four hitters accounted for nine of the team's 12 hits of the afternoon. McLeod singled twice and had a two-run homer go to with a run and a stolen base. Ayers singled two times, scored two times and swiped a pair of bases, while Madison Hurt lined her own two hits with a run and one stolen base. Murphy had one single and an RBI as did Brown with a single and sac fly. De'Laynie Hollis sliced a double and Olivia Mason singled.

After setting the Tigers down in order to start the contest, Murphy ground out to second and brought home Hurt, who singled, stole second and moved to third on Ayers single, for a 1-0 lead.

Edward Waters took its first lead with three scores in the top of the second and made it 4-1 via a run on a wild pitch in the third.

In the home third, Ayers reached on a visitor error and swiped second base. She trotted home when McLeod belted a two-run home run and cut the deficit to 4-3.

Hollis led off the fourth with a double to center field and moved to third on a Hurt ground out. The catcher raced home on a wild pitch to tie the contest, 4-4

ASU completes its regular season on Friday (April 26) in a 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. home doubleheader against Trinity Baptist College.
