ATLANTA, Ga. – A promising Lady Rams season came to a tough finish. Albany State came up short in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals in a close, 4-2, final against Clark Atlanta before an equally-tough Third-Place match, 4-3, versus Spring Hill College.
After splitting the two regular season meetings, Clark Atlanta took the doubles' point and took an upset at the top singles for a 2-0 lead. ASU received a third singles win from
Jonay Brittain (6-2, 6-3) and Sumana Panuganti claimed the sixth-singles matchup (6-0, 7-5), but CAU pulled out tight fourth and fifth singles for the Semifinal-deciding points.
ASU tried to make it three-straight for the season against Spring Hill in the Third-Place Match. The Lady Rams clinched the doubles points with wins at second and third doubles.
Natalya Ogunwale and
Bianca Leao won straight sets victories at top singles (7-5, 6-1) and
Bianca Leao at fifth singles (6-1, 6-2). The Badgers, though, reversed the previous matchups endings by recording upsets in the other three singles matchups in three sets each and pulled out the 4-3 close win for Third Place.
ASU completed its 2024 season with an impressive 20-5 overall record, a 2 ½ game improvement from the 2023 season with a squad of all juniors and freshmen ready to make an even bigger run next spring.
