FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It took an extra day to complete a tight league series. Albany State used a late seventh-inning charge, but it fell a run short as Fort Valley State hung on for the 5-4 softball win on Monday afternoon.
Trailing 5-2 heading to the top of the final at bat, Brielle Thompson started the comeback attempt by reaching on a home error. After two outs, Madison Hurt and Keyatta Ayers joined her on the bases to load them following a hit batter and a single. Romona McLeod lined a two-run single to left and cut the margin to 5-4. FVSU would retire the next ASU hitter and hold off the visitors' rally.
It was a rare ASU game without an extra base hit In fact, the Lady Rams had six different players slice singles. Along with McLeod's big two-run single in the seventh, Ayers drove in a run on a ground out and singled. Kaliyah Smith had a hit and swiped two bases, while Morgan Brown singled and scored a run. Trista Murphy and Jasmine Russell rounded out the Lady Ram hits. Madison Hurt added a run, one walk and was hit by a pitch.
McLeod came on in pitching relief and allowed only one earned run in three innings of work with three hits allowed.
ASU controlled the lead of the contest for the two-and-a-half innings. With two outs in the second, Russell singled to center field and brought Brown, who singled, home with the game's first run. Smith led off the visiting third with a bunt single, stole second and third and came home on Ayers ground out to short stop for a 2-0 lead.
In the home third, FVSU went on top with a four-run at bat on five hits to reverse the advantage, 4-2. The Wildcats added an import sixth-inning run with two outs to make it 5-2.
ASU will have a day off before it hosts Edward Waters in a single makeup contest on Tuesday, April 24, starting at 1 p.m.
