SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Lady Rams extended their stay for a couple days in the post season on Monday. Albany State took control in the third quarter and never left it go for the eventual 58-41 victory over Spring Hill College in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball First Round contest.
Leading 18-12 at half, ASU doubled up Spring Hill with the opening seven points of the third period to make it a 13-point advantage, 25-12, only 2:10 in. Still leading by 13 points two minutes later, the Lady Rams ran off the next five points and extended the margin to 19 points, 38-19. The Lady Rams ended any Badger comeback hopes with the opening six points of the final 10 minutes and coasted home for the 16-point finish.
Milana Holmes led the winning charge by making 6 of 8 free throws as part of her ASU-best 14 points to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double, three steals and two assists. Elisa Saffold downed a trio of 3-pointers for 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Keyra Peterson pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and netted nine points.
Delicia Brown chipped in eight points on 4 of 7 attempts for ASU, while Yasmine Fairchild had 10 rebounds to go with four points.
Marta Duda guided the Spring Hill cause with a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Following a Badger bucket 29 seconds into the game, the Lady Rams ran off the next 11 points behind a Saffold 3-pointer, which gave her team its first lead (5-2), and capped by a Chelsea Hill jumper and 11-2 lead. Leading 13-12 at 6:42 in the second frame, ASU connect on five free throws in the final six minutes for a the 18-12 intermission tally.
ASU will move on to the Second Round of the 14-team women's hoop SIAC tournament where it will face Lane College on Wednesday (March 6) in a 5 p.m. tip-off in Savannah.
