ALBANY, Ga. – After a winning series over the weekend, the Golden Rams could not keep the momentum in a Monday non-conference matchup. No. 1 University of Tampa used four multiple-run home runs and held Albany State to scoring in only one inning of a 13-2 baseball final.
With two outs in the top of the first, the visiting Spartans (14-0) hit the first two of four round-trippers with a 3-run variety and moments later they added a grand slam for a 7-0 trip to the plate. Tampa added a two-run blast in the top of the second to make it a 9-0 margin. ASU (6-5) cut into the deficit with Dominic Rutligiano and Jonathan Logsdon singled home a run apiece to make it 9-2. Tampa added a second 3-run homer in the top of the third and held ASU to only a pair of Hill Corley singles in the final four frames.
For the Golden Rams, Logsdon doubled and singled with a RBI, while Corley had his two hits. Other than Rutigliano's run-scoring single, Zane Ross and Nathan Saavedra, who scored a run, lined the other singles.
In relief work, both Kaleb King and William Beasely logged scoreless outings in a combined three innings of work.
Trailing 7-0 going to the home third, Austin Roberts walked and was sacrificed to second before he ran home on Rutligiano's single to center field. Logsdon drove home Rutligiano on his own drive to center as the Golden Ram offense.
ASU will have Tuesday off until it host Auburn University-Montgomery in a Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 28) contest starting at 2 p.m.
