COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Lady Rams kept the runs coming on Sunday afternoon. Albany State scored four first-inning runs and added five more later for its second run-rule outcome over Benedict College to complete the weekend softball sweep.
ASU (12-5/3-0 SIAC East) took advantage of a pair of Benedict (0-11/0-3 SIAC East) miscues sprinkled in with singles by Madison Hurt and Romona McLeod and a Trista Murphy sac fly to open a 4-0 lead. The Lady Rams' Kaliyah Smith did not allow a Tiger hit over the first 4.1 innings of work. ASU added a pair of runs in the fifth and three more in the fifth to end the game one-frame early.
Keyatta Ayers recorded the biggest ASU hit of the day with her 3-run homer in the sixth to go with a single and three runs scored. Murphy laced a RBI double and a sac fly, while Olivia Mason drove in two and singled. Hurt laid down a bunt single, scored twice and swiped a base. McLeod had a RBI hit and both Morgan Brown and Delaynie Hollis singled and scored once.
After not allowing a hit until an out recorded in the fifth, Smith gave up three hits overall, one earned run and struck out seven for the win.
Leading 4-0 starting the fifth inning, Ayers singled and came home on a Murphy two-bagger. Mason doubled home Murphy for a 6-0 new score. Ayers connected for her 3-run home run in the sixth, before Benedict put its lone run on the scoreboard in the home sixth.
ASU returns home and will host Savannah State for the next 3-game series starting Friday afternoon, March 1, in a 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. first pitches.
