Golden Rams Fall to Savannah State in Close 28-26 Battle

Savannah, GA – In a hard-fought game at Theodore A. Wright Stadium on November 2, Albany State University fell to Savannah State, 28-26. With this narrow loss, the Golden Rams drop to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in SIAC play, while the Tigers improve to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

The Golden Rams opened strong, scoring on their first drive as Isaiah Knowles connected with Jamill Williams for a 22-yard touchdown, giving ASU an early 7-0 lead. Savannah State quickly responded, with quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan leading a 42-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brent Carr, tying the score at 7-7. The Tigers built momentum, scoring two more unanswered touchdowns to lead 21-7 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Albany State fought back, taking advantage of an interception to complete an 8-yard drive capped by a short touchdown pass from Knowles to Williams, cutting the deficit to 21-13. Later in the quarter, Knowles found Kieren Jackson on a 25-yard strike, closing the gap further to 21-19 before halftime.

After a scoreless start to the third quarter, Savannah State extended their lead late in the period, with Shamarcus Poole punching in a 1-yard touchdown to make it 28-19. The Golden Rams mounted a late comeback in the fourth, as Knowles connected with Tiant Wyche for a 30-yard touchdown with just over three minutes remaining, pulling ASU within two points at 28-26. Despite a determined final push, the Rams couldn't regain the lead, and Savannah State held on for the win.

Key performers included quarterback Isaiah Knowles, who threw four touchdown passes, and Jamill Williams, who hauled in two of those scoring receptions. On defense, ASU fought hard but ultimately fell short in the contest.
