For more than 45 years since its founding, the National Youth Sports Program played a major role in the transformation of Albany, Georgia from a town with too many unproductive, unsupervised youth with too much time on their hands, to one providing the youth with a valuable structured program. The Albany State Youth Enrichment Program, formally known as the NYSP program, is a community outreach initiative designed to provide youth within the city of Albany and Dougherty County, Georgia and surrounding areas an opportunity to participate and engage in a variety of enrichment activities during the months of June and July. Within this program, the primary ventures include youth development, physical fitness and wellness, and development of social and academic skills. The youth will engage in hands on sport activities, and immersive courses in the area of English, Math, and Science taught during the program. As a result, these participants will be better prepared to excel academically and will have increased awareness of healthy lifestyles. This summer outreach program will also allow the participants to think and begin planning their educational and professional careers.
In addition, the ASU community (students & faculty) will benefit by practical experience while serving the community through community outreach programs. Students from various disciplines such as Health and Human Performance and Teacher Education Programs in the specialties such as Science, Math, and English will be providing hands-on experience of engaging the participants in sports and educational programs. The ASU students will develop and deliver instruction to the various age groups. ASYEP will seek to hire current and former ASU employees and students through the duration of the program. The program will support youth in the community between the ages 8-15. The seven-week summer enrichment program services between 350-450 youth during the hours of 7:30-2:30 daily, Monday through Friday.
