HOOPS CENTRAL: Albany State at Savannah State University

ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany State University women's and men's basketball teams returns to the court on Monday, February 10th as they travel to Savannah, Georgia for a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against the Tigers of Savannah State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. inside Tiger Arena. 
 
The women's basketball team enters the contest (4-16, 2-10 SIAC) falling to the Tigers of Savannah State University 70-52 on Saturday, February 1st.
The opening minutes of the game saw missed shots and turnovers from both teams as they worked to take the lead. Despite the Tigers securing a few baskets to get on boards, SSU jumped ahead to take a 19-11 first quarter lead.

Mimicking the opening quarter, the Golden Rams attempted to get in the game, but missed shots and lack of rebounds plagued the Golden Rams advances. The halftime score ruled in favor of the visiting Tigers, who used a 15-0 run to bring the score 34-11.
 
Although the attempt was noted, ASU was not able to gain control of the game in the final two quarter. After trailing 45-37 in the third quarter, the game ruled in favor of the visiting team with a score of 70-52.

Despite the loss, the Golden Rams led the game in points out of turnovers (17-16).
 
Leaders
Alexandria James and Tyra Thompson led the Golden Rams with 12 points each, while Yolanda givens was not too far behind with nine points. Thompson secured nine rebounds for ASU while Alexis Smith tallied nine boards.

The Golden Rams enters the contest (13-9, 10-3 SIAC) securing a 72-57 victory over the Tigers of Savannah Valley State University on Saturday, February 1st.
 
FIRST HALF
  • Albany State opened up the game with a 22-19 lead with 8:37 left in the half
  • Juwan High collected a jumper for a 36-26 lead with 4:00 remaining in the half
  • The Golden Rams advanced its lead 41-31 on a layup by Mario Young with 1:43 left and taking a 43-35 lead at the half
  • ASU shot 62.1 percent from the floor in the first half and combined for 15 turnovers
  • Albany State scored 16 points off turnovers while SSU had 6
 
SECOND HALF
  • Randy McClure collected a three-pointer in the opening of the second half to give the Golden Rams a 13-point advantage, but the Tigers answered right away with a three from Marcus Scott 
  • A three-point play by Joshua Jerome made it a 11-point game with 10:11 left
  • SSU went scoreless over the next two minutes with the Golden Rams extending the lead 66-50 with 8:09 left 
  • ASU secured its final basket with 00:42 second left to take the 72-57 victory 
  • Albany State shot 40 percent from the floor in the second half while the Tigers shot 34.8 percent

  • Albany State finished the game shooting 50.8 percent from the floor and SSU shot 44.2 percent
