COLUMBIA, S.C. – Albany State University came back from a three-point deficit to Benedict College with 00:09 seconds remaining on a dunk and one by
Napoleon Harris to tie the game at 74 and send it into overtime.
The Golden Rams outscored Benedict College 13-6 in OT and earned an 87-80 win on Monday night.
The game was a blow-for-blow battle from the tip. It included eight ties and 10 lead changes. After trading leads early, the Golden Rams built a 29-28 lead with 1:26 left in the first half. Benedict then closed the half with taking a 32-29 lead into the half.
The Tigers continued to add points in the second half to start the scoring to take a 34-29 lead before Albany State went on their own run and took a 40-36 lead on back-to-back three pointers from
Joshua Jerome and
Kamil Brown.
The Tigers went on a 8-0 run to regain a 76-59 lead. A layup and one by
Kamil Brown cut Benedict's lead 68-67 with 1:52 remaining. A dunk from the Golden Rams, Deon Joyner fouled
Napoleon Harris, sending him to the line. He hit a free throw to tie the game at 74.
The two teams traded possessions, but neither found a bucket and the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
This is the first the Golden Rams played an overtime game this season.
Brown scored first, then added another basket to take a 78-74 lead with 3:23 left in the game. The Golden Rams continued to add points to cruise to an 87-80 overtime victory.
Mario Young scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Golden Rams.
Randy McClure finished the contest with 16 points.
Joshua Jerome and
Kamil Brown scored 12 points each respectively. Rounding out the double-digit scoring for Albany State was
Napoleon Harris with 11 points.
Albany State was 28-52 (53.8 percent) overall and 7-22 (31.8 percent) from the three-point line and 24-29 (82.8 percent) from the free-point line. The Golden Rams also tallied 15 assists on 28 made baskets, including five assists from
Mario Young.
Albany State outrebounded Benedict, 35-30.
