FORT VALLEY STATE TOPPLES ASU VOLLEYBALL IN FIVE SETS

Golden Rams Drop First SIAC Match of the Season

FORT VALLEY- The Albany State University Golden Rams dropped a close five set decision to Fort Valley State University on the road Tuesday night.

The Golden Rams took sets one and three 25-15, 25-16 while the Wildcats captured set two 25-14 and set four 25-19 and squeezed out a 16-14 in the final set to take the match.

Both Jannai Cheeks and Keonna Hobbs totaled 11 kills to lead Albany State's effort. Jolesia McClenton finished with half of the Golden Rams digs with a season high 25 and a match best 4 service aces.

FVSU's Nia Bell finished the match with a double-double of 17 digs and led all performers with 13 kills.

In set one, the Golden Rams faced an early 5-1 deficit before fighting back to for a 25-15 win. The Wildcats committed a match high ten errors and hit a negative percentage (-.148) but rebounded with an 11 kill, 3 error display in set two for a 25-14 triumph.

The two teams alternated the next two, setting the stage for a fifth and deciding rally set. ASU fell behind 4-1 to begin the final set but rallied back to tie it at 4 all courtesy of an assisted block from Hobbs and Kaelyn Jordan.

The fifth would see six more ties before its conclusion. The Golden Rams were one point away from a win at 14-13 but back to back kills from India King and Bell swung match point in favor of Fort Valley State.

An attack error from ASU's side of the court gave the Wildcats the win, lifting their record to 2-3 on the year.

Albany State will return to action on Saturday at USC-Aiken. Game time is scheduled for 2:00pm in Aiken, South Carolina.
