GOLDEN RAMS FALL IN REGION OPENER 4-0

Albany State Returns to Action Friday at 3:30pm

WEST PALM BEACH, FL- The Albany State University Golden Rams fell to Palm Beach Atlantic 4-0 on the opening day of the NCAA South Region 1 Tournament Thursday night at Simpson Field.

The Golden Rams will take on Valdosta State in the loser's bracket elimination game on Friday at 3:30pm. The host PBA Sailfish will tangle with Alabama-Huntsville at 1:00pm tomorrow with the winner advancing to the regional final on Saturday at 1:00pm. Alabama-Huntsville toppled Valdosta 11-6 in Thursday's opening game.

Both starting pitchers turned in solid performances combining to allow eight hits, with only five through four and a half of a scoreless game. The teams also committed one error apiece, the first by the Golden Rams in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After a tightly contest game through four and a half innings, the Sailfish (34-6) used four hits and the one Golden Rams error to finally get on the scoreboard. With one on, the fielding error preceded a walk drawn by Maddie Biggs to load the bases with one out. Taylor Pennica then reached on a fielder's choice and Claudia Pizzrelli beat Lavette Tucker's throw to home plate and the Sailfish went up 1-0.

With the bases still loaded, Magnolia West then reached first after being hit by the pitch and Maddie Bertisch followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Alison Yawn from third for a 3-0 advantage. PBA got another run on a groundout to the pitcher before Jade Williams's acrobatic snag of a fly to shallow center ended the inning with the Rams trailing 4-0.

ASU got two runners on in the top of the seventh, one courtesy of an infield error at short but relief pitcher Jana Wagner would record a strikeout to end the game.

The Golden Rams (29-23) will face a familiar foe in the Blazers on Friday as the two teams played a home and home doubleheader series this season. Valdosta State won all four matchups.
