Albany State Homers Three Times To Close Out Series

ALBANY- Albany State University came away with a doubleheader sweep over Paine College Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.

In game one with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions intentionally walked Riliani Familia to load the bases. Nic Griggs made them pay, blasting a grand slam to left center and thwarting any plans of a late rally by Paine. After the Rams charged out to a 10-1 lead at the close of the first inning, the Lions slowly worked their way back into the contest, outscoring ASU 6-1 over the next four innings.

Before Griggs' heroics, the Lions had scored two runs in their half of the sixth to cut their deficit to 12-9.

Tyler Morris drove in four in Saturday's opener including bases loaded clearing double in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Wilcher came in as the second reliever for the Rams in game one, earning his fourth win of the season over three and two thirds.

In the final game, the Rams put up six runs in their half of the sixth inning to edge the Lions 10-3. The score was tied 3-3, through four and a half innings until ASU got the go ahead score when Morris hit a solo shot to left field.

After Kelvin Wimbish reached on a walk to begin the inning, Familia followed and set off the Rams' sixth inning spurt with a homer to left center. Back to back hits plated runs for ASU and Griggs scored on a wild pitch to account for the final point spread.

Tristan Rice improved to 4-3 on the season after entering at the start of the fourth inning and holding Paine (15-20, SIAC 8-9) scoreless the rest of the way.

Albany State (22-16, SIAC 13-4) will closed out the regular season with a series at LeMoyne-Owen College April 27-28 in Memphis, TN.
