UT Turns in Solid Pitching Performance in Series Opener

ALBANY- The University of Tampa defeated Albany State University 7-1 in baseball action Friday evening at West Campus Field.

The Spartans took game one of what will be a three game, two day series with the Rams. The two teams will face off in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1pm.

After being held scoreless through seven and a half innings, the Golden Rams finally got on the board in their half on the eighth. Kelvin Wimbish, who singled to get on then advanced after a balk and later a walk, scored from third as Nic Griggs attempted to reach first base.

Prior to that, Tampa starting pitcher David Lebron gave up five hits but impressively struck out 14 ASU batters over seven innings of work.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third with two out, the Golden Rams had runners on the corners but Lebron's seventh strikeout of the game ended ASU's scoring threat. Harrison Bragg crushed a solo homer to left field to lead off the top of the fourth inning and later Brandon Gali's RBI single scored Nick DeTringo and the Spartans took a 3-0 lead.

Tampa scored three runs in the top of fifth off of a single and two ASU errors and later added another run in the top of the sixth. The Spartans improve to 15-3 overall while the Rams slip to 6-6 on the season.
