NORTH ALABAMA SWEEPS SOFTBALL DOUBLEHEADER

ALBANY- The University of North Alabama rolled to a softball sweep of Albany State University Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.

The Lions, ranked #10 in the latest NFCA Division II Softball Coaches Poll, trounced the Golden Rams 18-5 in game one and pulled away late earn a 8-0 shutout in game two. UNA lifts their 2018 record to 28-4 overall while the Golden Rams slip to 14-16 on the year.

UNA won the opener in five shortened innings 18-5. The Lions had two big innings, scoring seven in their first at bat and then plated six runs in the top of the fourth. North Alabama was working on a shutout with a 16-0 lead in the fourth but Lavette Tucker got ASU on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.

In game two, the Lions held the Golden Rams to just one hit, a third inning single from Danielle Turner, in the 8-0 shutout. In comparison to the Lions' 21 hit barrage in game one, ASU starting pitcher Aryn McGowan fared better against the UNA giving up just six hits. The Lions were ahead 4-0 before orchestrating a four-run outing the in the top of the sixth off four hits and one ASU error.

The Golden Rams will hit the field again tomorrow in a non-conference doubleheader against Georgia College. The opener is scheduled for 4pm.
