STEWART’S WALKOFF LIFTS ASU PAST CLAFLIN 3-2

Golden Rams Rally to Take Game One of Weekend Series

ALBANY- Jala Stewart hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Albany State University a thrilling 3-2 win over Claflin University Friday afternoon at West Campus Field.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Danielle Turner reached with a single up the middle. Keyanna Dawson subbed in to pinch run and was moved over to third when Brianna Murillo hit a long drive to the right field wall.

Claflin's pitcher Tiaria Norman then got the Rams down to their last out, striking out Lavette Tucker to set the stage for Stewart's heroics. The Golden Rams were blanked through five and a half inning until Murillo led the bottom of the sixth off with a solo shot to left field. Three batters later with runners on first and second, Mikiyah Harris drove in Lavette Tucker with a double to left field to tie the game 2-2.

 With the win the Golden Rams remain unbeaten in SIAC play at 8-0 this season.

Kayla Cato, the Panthers' first batter, led the game off with a solo homer and Claflin got another run in the top of the third when Cato scored an unearned run on a fielding error.

The two teams will complete their weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm on West Campus.
