February 27, 2018

BIRMINGHAM, AL- Randy McClure scored a season high 27 points to lead the Albany State University Golden Rams past Kentucky State 92-79 in the opening round of the SIAC men's basketball tournament.

McClure finished as the game's leading scorer in what was his first 20+ point performance of the season.

The two teams traded baskets throughout the first half as they combined for two ties and eight lead changes. Back to back three-pointers, the latter by Ditalion Battle gave the Thorobreds their largest lead of the game, a nine point spread of 28-19 with 7:54 left in the first half. The Golden Rams answered with a 17-7 run, capped by a McClure dunk at the 1:29 mark and ASU led 36-35.

A flurried finish to the first half saw four lead changes over the final minute with Mike Green's last second layup giving the Rams a 40-39 lead at the intermission.
The Rams held the lead for the majority of the second half, the exception when Battle's layup gave KSU a two point edge, 58-56, with 9:26 to go. Back to back buckets by Jared Harrington put Albany State back in front and the Golden Rams used a late 12-2 push to grab their first double digit lead of the night, 74-63 with 2:43 left in regulation.

ASU iced the game with some solid free throw shooting, going 9-9 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes. Harrington scored 16 points off the bench, 14 of which came in the second half. Rahdin Hughes finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards while Tyler Walker and Mike Green chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

David Jelks and Ray Croon both scored 19 in a losing effort for the Thorobreds.

The Golden Rams will face off against Clark-Atlanta on Thursday at 7:45 in quarterfinal action from Birmingham, Alabama.
