GOLDEN RAMS' RUN ENDS IN SIAC QUARTERFINALS

Albany State Drops Close Contest to Clark-Atlanta

March 1, 2018

BIRMINGHAM- Clark-Atlanta University survived an upstart Albany State University men's basketball team, inching by the Golden Rams 57-55 in Thursday night's quarterfinal action at the SIAC Tournament.

In a second half that featured 12 lead changes, Jared Harrington's layup with 3:25 left in the contest, gave ASU a 54-53 advantage but the Golden Rams would not hit another shot from the floor.

On the ensuing possession, Akil Douglas put the Panthers back in front 55-54 until one of two free throws from Randy McClure tied the game at 55 all with 1:46 left. CAU had a chance to ice the game but went 2 of 4 from the line over the final 45 seconds for a two point lead, and ultimately the final score.

The Rams' last two shot attempts fell short, punching the Panthers' ticket to tomorrow's semifinal.

Albany State led the game for just over 27 minutes to only 7 minutes for Clark-Atlanta. ASU out-rebounded the Panthers 47-39, including 15 off the offensive glass which yielded 14 second chance points.

The Golden Rams' bid for an upset got off to a good start, as they charged out from the opening tip to take an 11-2 lead at the 15:44 mark of the first half. The Panthers then reeled off an 11-2 run for the first of 9 ties in the contest. ASU went back ahead by five with 4:43 left in the half only to have the Panthers to close the gap and knot the game at 28 all with 27 seconds before the break.

Rahdin Hughes hit a jumper as the half expired to give the Rams a two point lead at the intermission.

Shelvick Henry led all performers in the low scoring affair with 15 points off the bench. Harrington was ASU's high man with 14 points, also as a reserve. Hughes was the only other Rams to tally double figures with 12 points.

Albany State ends the season with an 8-21 overall record.
