HURRICANES ESCAPE WITH DOUBLEHEADER SOFTBALL SWEEP

February 21, 2018

ALBANY, GA- The Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes blew past Albany State University with a series sweep on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.

The Canes dominated Albany State in the opener, blanking the Golden Rams 13-0 and later rode some last minute heroics to steal the second game, 2-1. With the two wins, Georgia Southwestern moves its overall record to a game over .500 at 7-6. Shannon Gibson walked three batters but allowed no hits in the inning shortened game one while Brittany Childs fanned seven over 7 complete innings to pick up the win in game two.

In game one the Hurricanes scored in each of their five at bats to defeat the Golden Rams in convincing fashion 13-0. GSW's offense, which included homers from both Elizabeth Wills and Hayley flowed effortlessly, as they finished the game with 12 RBI on the runs scored. Wills' homer drove in three in the top of the third while Tierce's two run dinger came in the fifth, accounting for the final point spread.

As neither team gave an inch defensively, Wednesday's nightcap remained scoreless through four and a half and it took their last at bat for the Canes to squeeze out the victory.

Megan Shepherd hit her second home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fifth and give ASU a 1-0 advantage, a lead that would hold through the sixth and until the Canes' final at bat. GSW's First, Cassidy Burton reached on an error to lead off the 7th. ASU got one out on a fly ball to left but the Canes' next batter, Lauren Kuerzi smashed a two run homer to give her team a one run lead.

In their final at bat, the Rams got back to back, two out singles from pinch hitters Brianna Murrillo and Aryn McGowan but Jade Williams grounded out to second to end the game.
The Golden Rams will host Point University for Greek Day on Friday afternoon at West Campus. The double header is scheduled for a 2pm start.
