EIGHTH INNING SURGE PUSHES WEST GEORGIA PAST ALBANY STATE

EIGHTH INNING SURGE PUSHES WEST GEORGIA PAST ALBANY STATE

February 17, 2018

CARROLLTON- The University of West Georgia used a late scoring outburst to defeat the Albany State Golden Rams 13-3 Saturday afternoon at Cole Field.

The Wolves improve to 9-0 on the year while Albany State slips to 3-4 overall.

In what was a virtually error free (sans one from UWG) and tightly contested game, the Golden Rams trailed 4-3 headed to the Wolves' half of the eighth inning. After the first batter struck out, West Georgia went on a scoring tear, with 9 runs on 5 hits including a grand slam from Cade Marlowe that put the Wolves up 10-3. Later in the inning the Rams' first error of the afternoon led to three more runs for the final point spread.

Albany State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second when an RBI double to right center scored Lawrence Hyde from first base. The Golden Rams added another run on a double in the third, this courtesy of Riliani Familia to bring Kelvin Wimbish home. ASU would hold that advantage through three and a half innings until Brian Dansereau homered to left field to put the Wolves in the scoring column. In the fifth UWG added a score to tie the game at 2 apiece.

Albany State temporarily went back in front after Nic Griggs doubled and later scored an unearned run on a throwing error. The Wolves responded to reclaim the lead on a two run dinger by Chris Michaels in the bottom of the sixth

The Golden Rams will attempt to earn a split in the weekend series when the two teams meet up tomorrow at 1pm.
