LADY RAMS THROTTLE FORT VALLEY STATE 82-55

LADY RAMS THROTTLE FORT VALLEY STATE 82-55

FORT VALLEY, GA-The Albany State University women's basketball team avenged last month's controversial loss with an 82-55 triumph over Fort Valley State University Saturday night.

On January 20th in Albany, a jumper at the buzzer, which was later confirmed and should have stood, was waved off and the Wildcats escaped with a one point lead at ASU's Winter Homecoming.

On Saturday, the Golden Rams returned the favor and left little doubt with a dominant performance on the road.

FVSU got their only lead of the night on the game's first basket. Ashley Johnson answered with a three-pointer to put ASU in front, a lead they would hold for the rest of the game. After taking a slim 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Golden Rams began the next stanza with a 20-4 run, silencing the Wildcats' Winter Homecoming crowd.

Albany State held a comfortable 43-21 lead at the intermission.

Achanti Layfield was the only Golden Ram starter to net double figures with a team high 13 points. Albany State got a solid lift from their reserves in the win over the Wildcats. Led by Muneerah Drummond and Uche Ibebunjo who scored 12 and 11 points respectively, the Golden Rams' reserves outscored Fort Valley's bench 52-8. Ibebunjo also pulled down 10 boards for her first double-double of the season.

ASU's largest lead of the night was a 37 point advantage (67-30) that came in the waning minutes of the final quarter. Defensively the Golden Rams held the Wildcats to just 16 of 60 from the floor, 26% overall. Fort Valley falls to 4-21 overall and 4-12 in the SIAC.

The Golden Rams will wrap their 2017-18 home slate on Monday when they host Senior Night at West Campus Arena. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
