LADY TIGERS RALLY PAST ALBANY STATE 76-70

Benedict Protects Home Court, Earns Season Split with ASU

January 27, 2018

COLUMBIA, SC- Benedict College used a +15 point swing the fourth quarter to earn a 76-70 win over Albany State University Saturday afternoon.

After trailing by nine at the end of three, the Lady Tigers (6-14, SIAC 6-6) outscored Albany State 24-9 in the closing quarter to split the season series. Both teams defended their home courts this season; the Lady Golden Rams defeated Benedict 62-55 back on December 2nd in Albany.

Essence Stinnette and Ay'Anna Bey led the way for Benedict with 12 points apiece.

Tyesha Davis hit a three pointer with 20 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Lady Golden Rams a 61-49 lead, their largest of the game. BC's Raven Baker countered with a three-pointer of her own 16 seconds later and the Lady Tigers went to the fourth with the aforementioned nine point deficit.

ASU maintained the lead for duration of the fourth until a late 11-2 spurt by the Lady Tigers put them in front for the first time since the 9:07 mark of the third quarter. A three-point play by Andresha Smith, her only field goal of the game, cut Albany's lead to one, 70-69 with 1:41 remaining. A turnover on the Rams' ensuing possession led to two more free throw attempts from Smith; she converted one shot to knot the game at 70 all.

After ASU's next offensive set came up empty, Shirvel Luke drained a go-ahead three pointer to put Benedict in front 73-70 with 40 seconds remaining. Baker hit one of two from the line and a layup by Shanaissa White as time expired accounted for the final point spread.

Benedict's big final quarter was aided by the Lady Golden Rams offensive struggles over the final ten minutes. ASU, who didn't hit a field goal the final four minutes of regulation, scored just nine points in the fourth quarter on 3 of 14 shooting from the field.

Alexandria James led all performers with a game high 17 points.

Albany State will return to action on Monday at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
