January 22, 2108
AUGUSTA, GA- The Albany State Lady Golden Rams held off a last minute charge by Paine College to capture a 73-70 victory Monday night at at the HEAL Complex.
Elesha Foster and
Alexandria James both registered double figures for Albany State scoring 15 and 14 points, respectively. Despite placing five players in double figures, the Lady Lions fell short and remain winless on the season, dropping to 0-16 overall, 0-10 in league play.
The upstart Lions, hungry for their first "W" of the year battled to the very end of regulation.
Alexandria James hit a jumper with 1:01 left in the game to put the Lady Rams up 73-66. Paine then got back to back layups that book-ended a critical ASU turnover to pull within a three of tying the game. With 18 ticks left another turnover and subsequent foul by the Golden Rams sent the Lions' Ashley Washington to the line for two shots
Washington misfired on both free throw attempts but incredulously corralled her own rebound and went in for a layup that missed its mark.
Albany State burned a timeout with 11 seconds left but when play resumed another turnover by the Lady Rams led to two more attempts for Paine to send the game beyond regulation. The Lions' layup and last ditch three-point attempt fell short and ASU held on for the three-point win.
The Lions led by two, 27-25 at the close of the first quarter but ASU bounced back, outscoring Paine (+9) in the second quarter to take a 45-38 lead at the half.
Taylor Borum led all scorers with 17 points.
ASU will return to action with a road game at Benedict College on Saturday at 1:00pm.
