Lady Rams defeat Miles to advance; fall to Claflin in semifinals

HEPHZIBAH, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team made a comeback to advance to the semifinals of the 2017 SIAC Softball Championship Tournament. However, it lost a heartbreaker in the next round to fall into the loser's bracket.
 
In its second round game, #2E ASU overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat #1W Miles College 7-4 to advance to the tournament semifinals. However, the Lady Rams were nipped in that round by #1E Claflin University by a narrow 3-2 score.
 
With the split, the Lady Rams (25-21) fall to the loser's bracket where they will face Miles (15-27) again at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Lady Bears defeated Benedict 9-0 to earn another contest with ASU.
 
The winner will meet Claflin (32-18) in the championship game at 1 p.m., while the losing team will be eliminated from the tournament.
 
Albany State 7, Miles 4
 
Miles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second, Albany State scored its first run. Jala Stewart homered to left field to cut the team's deficit to 3-1.
 
In the top of the third, the Lady Rams was able to tie the game at three. Kyera Whitaker smashed a triple to score Aryn McGowan and Toni Coleman. Miles regained the lead in the bottom of the stanza after a run gave it a 4-3 edge.
 
Brianna Murillo's single in the fourth inning scored Kayla Alexander for another tie at four. In the fifth inning, Alexander doubled to send Danielle Turner and Jade Williams to the plate for a 6-4 advantage.
 
In the sixth inning, Albany State got an insurance run when McGowan hit a single to score Murillo.
 
Murillo and Stewart each had two hits for ASU. Alexander and Whitaker added two RBIs each. Aryn McGowan was the winning pitcher.
 
The Lady Rams had nine hits, two errors and 11 runners left on base.
 
Claflin 3, Albany State 2
 
Albany State used the first two innings to build a 2-0 lead. Coleman's double down the left field line to score Malea Maye in the bottom of the first. In the second, Lavette Tucker scored off a wild pitch.
 
However, the Lady Rams could not hold the advantage. Claflin scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
 
Tiffany Massey led the Lady Rams with two hits. ASU had four hits, and error and eight runners left on base. Massey was also the losing pitcher.
