Golden Rams claim SIAC East title with win over KSU

FRANKFORT, Ky.- The Albany State baseball team snapped its five-game losing streak and captured a championship on the same day. ASU defeated Kentucky State 8-2 to win the SIAC East Division championship and nail down the number one seed for the upcoming league tournament.
 
The Golden Rams improve to 17-28 overall and 15-6 in the SIAC. The Thorobreds fall to 18-32, 12-9.
 
Albany State took the lead in the first inning with Jonatan Galan hit a single to center field to score Nicolas Griggs. In the second inning, ASU added three more runs. Griggs single for Quantico Dodson-Williams to score. A single by Ryan McClendon led to runs by Kelvin Wimbish and Chasen Roulhac, and the Golden Rams led 4-0.
 
After Kentucky State scored a run in the bottom of the second, ASU increased its lead in the fourth. The Golden Rams scored two more runs to take a 6-1 advantage. KSU added a run to make the score 6-2.
 
Albany State added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the win.
 
Jonatan Galan led Albany State with three hits. Roulhac, Griggs, McClendon and Dodson-Williams each had two hits. McClendon also had two RBIs. Lawrence Hyde was the winning pitcher.
 
The Golden Rams collected 14 hits, committed no errors and had 13 runners left on base.
 
Albany State will compete in the 2017 SIAC Baseball championship Tournament May 3-7. The event will be held in Augusta, Ga. at Lake
Olmstead Stadium. Bracket information will be released soon.
