Lady Rams complete sweep of Clark Atlanta

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team was able to increase its lead in the SIAC East Division with a couple of wins against Clark Atlanta. ASU continued its high scoring and defeated the Lady Panthers on Saturday 17-9 and 11-2 to sweep the weekend series.
 
With the pair of victories, the Lady Rams own an overall record of 15-14 and an 11-2 SIAC league mark to remain in first place in the east division. Albany State has also won seven straight games.
 
CAU falls to 11-19, 7-5 and drops to third place behind Claflin University.

After Clark Atlanta scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Albany State answered quickly in the bottom of the stanza. Malea Maye hit a three-run homer to score Danielle Turner, Jade Williams and herself to give Albany State a 3-2 lead.
 
CAU tied the score at three in the second, but ASU regained the lead in the same inning. Maye hit a triple to send Keyanna Dawson home to make the score 4-3.
 
The Lady Panthers produced a 4-4 tie in the top of the third inning, but ASU recaptured the lead in the bottom. Lavette Tucker started the scoring with a two-run homer to put the Lady Rams back in front at 6-4. Dawson doubled to send Demeshia Russell, and Turner singled to center field to allow Williams and Dawson to score and build 9-4 advantage.
 
However, Clark Atlanta battled back in the top of the fourth inning and scored five runs to even the score at nine. Albany State had another answer for the visiting team in the bottom of the inning. Toni Coleman belted a solo homerun over the left field wall to give ASU a 10-9 edge. Later, Dawson smashed a three-run homer, and the Lady Rams led 13-9.
 
ASU scored some insurance runs in the fifth inning. Jala Stewart hit a double to left field to score two runs, and Brianna Murillo singled to the same area to send Stewart to home plate and build a 16-9 lead.
 
Albany State ended the game in the bottom of the sixth when Turner's double allowed Williams to score.
 
Williams, Turner, Coleman and Dawson all went 3-for-4 during the contest. Dawson had four RBIs, and Turner added three RBIs. Maye and Stewart and Lavette Tucker were all 2-for-4. Maye recorded four RBIs, and Stewart and Tucker each had two.
 
Tiffany Massey was the winning pitcher for the Lady Rams, who collected a season-high 23 hits, two errors and six runners left on base.
 
Tatianna Kelly and Sharnitra Woods led Clark Atlanta. Both players went 3-for-4 hitting. Cailla Williams had three RBIs. Shalonda Woods was the losing pitcher.

The Lady Rams opened the contest with a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Stewart hit a single to centerfield, and Maye and Williams scored to give ASU the early lead.
 
After a scoreless second inning, CAU tied the score at two in the top of the second inning. Albany State seized the lead for good in the bottom of the stanza. Maye scored off an error, and Tucker had a three-run homer to give the home team a 6-2 edge. Williams added a triple to centerfield that generated two more runs and an 8-2 advantage.
 
Albany State added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Lady Panthers scoreless the rest of the way to end the game in the fifth inning.
 
Tucker finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Williams was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Stewart was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Tiffany Massey was the winning pitcher, recording three strikeouts and only allowing three hits.
 
The Lady Rams had 12 total hits, no errors and five LOBs.
 
Kelly was the top player for CAU once again, going 2-for-2 from the plate. Ajada Cofield was the losing pitcher.
 
Albany State will travel to Americus, Ga. on Tuesday, March 28 for non-conference action with Georgia Southwestern. The two teams split a pair of games on Feb. 21, with GSW winning the first game 11-10 and the Lady Rams 7-2 in the second contest. The doubleheader is slated to begin a 2 p.m.
