Golden Rams losing streak continues after loss to Claflin

ORANGEBURG, Ga.- Devontay Ward scored a career-high 25 points, but the Albany State men's basketball team could not take advantage of his big offensive night. ASU dropped an 83-68 decision to Claflin University, the top team in the SIAC East Division.
 
With the loss, The Golden Rams have lost their fifth straight game and nine out the last 10 contests. ASU now has an overall record of 10-17 and 4-12 in the SIAC. Claflin improves to 17-9, 12-5.
 
Albany State trailed for most of the game and could not make a major run to overtake its host. Trailing 23-21 at the 9:13 mark of the first half, ASU watched Claflin go on a 10-2 run to take a 33-23 edge with 7:08 left be for halftime. The Panthers led 41-29 at intermission.
 
In the second half, the Golden Rams continued to trail by double figures. At the 8:25 mark, Albany State was down 67-46.
 
Jadon Davis added 10 points and four rebounds for Albany State. Jackson Lenyear scored another 10 points.
 
The Golden Rams shot 29-of-48 (50%) from the field, 5-of-13 (38.5%) from three-point range and 5-9 (55.6%) from the free throw line.
 
Claflin was led by Austin Lawton, who recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds. Trevor Dantzler tallied 17 points, and Ryan McNeill-Moses and Benjamin Williams had 10 points apiece.
 
The Panthers shot 30-of-58 (51.7%) from the field, 8-of-16 (50%) from three-point range and 15-of-18 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will travel to Augusta, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 25 to face Paine College. The Golden Rams won the Jan. 14 meeting 68-59. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
