Lady Rams split doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team let one lead slip away in the first game, but was able to put its opponent out of contention during the second contest. ASU split a doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern, losing 11-10 after nine innings and winning 7-2 in Game 2.
 
With the split, the Lady Rams are now 2-10 overall. The Lady Hurricanes have a record 8-6.
 
Georgia Southwestern 11, Albany State 10
 
Albany State started the contest by jumping out to a huge lead. The team scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning. Malea Maye's sacrifice scored Jade Williams for an early 1-0 edge.
 
ASU built a commanding lead in the third inning. Williams scored off a walk to begin the scoring binge. Then, Brianna Murillo smashed a single to score Kayla Alexander and Tiffany Massey for a 4-0 advantage. Toni Coleman batted in Maye, and Aryn McGowan hit a three-run homer to the Lady Rams a 7-0 advantage.
 
Georgia Southwestern got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Albany State answered with two more runs in the bottom of the stanza. Maye's homerun scored her and Williams, and the Lady Rams owned a 9-3 lead.
 
The Lady Hurricanes used the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. GSW recorded two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to tie the game at nine apiece. Neither team scored in the seventh stanza, and the game with to extra innings.
 
Georgia Southwestern tallied a run in the top of the eighth inning, but ASU also tallied a run of its own. Williams scored again to tie the game at 10. GSW generated another run in the top of the ninth inning to take an 11-10 edge. The Lady Rams could not manufacture any more runs to continue the game.
 
Alexander and Coleman each led Albany State with two hits and an RBI. Maye added four RBIs. The Lady Rams collected nine hits, committed two errors and left nine runners on base. Massey was the losing pitcher.
 
The Lady Hurricanes were led by Hannah McCainss, who had three hits and six RBIs. Haylet Tierce added three hits. The Lady Hurricanes tallied 11 hits, an error and left 14 runners on base.
 
 
Albany State 7, Georgia Southwestern 2
 
After a scoreless first inning, Albany State took an early lead in the bottom of the second. Coleman smashed a homerun over left field wall for a 1-0 edge.
 
GSW tied the score in the top of the third inning with a run of its own. The Lady Rams reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the stanza. Aryn McGowan and Danielle Turner each hit homeruns to give ASU a 3-1 advantage. Maye added another homerun in the fourth inning, and Albany State led 4-1.
 
The Lady Hurricanes added a run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Rams put the game away in the bottom of the inning. Lavelle Tucker hit a three-run homerun to put the home team ahead 7-2. The game was called in the sixth inning due to inclement weather.
 
McGowan was the losing pitcher for Albany State. The Lady Rams had eight hits, two errors and two LOBs. McGowan was the winning pitcher.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 when it hosts Emmanuel College. Games times are at 1 and 3 p.m.
