Lady Rams’ defense shuts down Miles

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's basketball used the momentum from their previous game to fuel its stingy defense. ASU shut down the Miles College offense and utilized a balanced offense to defeat the Lady Bears 72-39.
 
With the victory, the Lady Rams have won two consecutive and now own a 4-18 overall record and 4-9 in the SIAC. Miles falls to 10-12, 5-6.
 
After a closely contested battle in the first quarter that saw Albany State lead 17-13 at the end, ASU would pull away from its guests in the second period. Leading 23-20 with 3:58 left before halftime, the Lady Rams used an 8-0 run to build a 31-20 edge at intermission.
 
Albany State used the third stanza to put Miles completely out of contention. The Lady Rams led 37-32 at the 5:32 mark but generated a 16-2 spurt for the rest of the period for a 53-34.
 
ASU continued to run away from the Lady Bears in the fourth period. Two free throws by Raven Wynn put the Albany State ahead 69-39 with 1:47 left to play.
 
Zuri Frost led ASU with a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds. Ashly Johnson came off the bench to score 11 points, and Tyra Thompson recorded 15 rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams shot 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the field, 3-of-17 (17.6%) from three-point range and 23-of-32 (71.9%) from the free throw line. Albany State also outrebounded Miles 54-40 and held it to 19% (12-63) from the field. No Lady Bear reached double figures in scoring.
 
Albany State will return to action on Monday, Feb. 13 when it hosts Tuskegee University. The Tigerettes won the Jan. 30 meeting 72-58. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
