ALBANY-Claflin University took the lead from the opening tip and cruised to a 68-51 win over Albany State University Thursday night at West Campus Arena.
 
The Golden Rams, held to 27 % shooting in the contest, placed two in double figures with Rahdin Hughes and JaDon Davis finishing with 10 points apiece. Albany State was outrebounded by Claflin (6-1, SIAC 3-0) 46-37 and the Panthers dominated the points in the paint 34-14.
 
The Panthers took their first double digit lead of the game on a layup by Jaret Gassett with 11:25 left in the first half. ASU cut the deficit under 10 points on back to back scores by Hughes, a layup and a three-pointer, but CU closed the half with a 6-0 run for a 37-23 lead at the break.
 
In the second half Claflin shot 46% from the field and maintained at least a 13 point lead the rest of the way. Their largest advantage of 22 (62-40) points came after Timothy Christian converted a three-point play with 5:15 left in the contest. Christian led all scorers with 16 points and Jaleel Charles put up a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday in another SIAC clash against Benedict College. Game time is scheduled for 3:00pm at West Campus Arena.
