Albany State to Face Kentucky State in SIAC Semi-Finals

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Albany State Lady Golden Rams punched their ticket to the SIAC Volleyball Tournament Semifinals with two wins on Wednesday at the Birmingham Sportsplex.

The Lady Golden Rams now face the tall task in a semifinal match against Kentucky State University tomorrow at 1pm.  The two teams met back in September at the SIAC Cross Division roundup where the Thoroughbreds came away with a three set sweep 25-11, 25-15, 25-22.

Albany State and Kentucky State both enter Thursday's match as the #2 seed in their respective divisions.

The Lady Golden Rams earned their berth in the semifinals after sweeping Lane in three sets 25-12, 25-19, 25-21 and battling back from two sets down to defeat Claflin University in a five set rally match.

Brittanni Phillips led ASU with 9 kills in the victory over Lane, a match that took just over an hour to wrap up. The Lady Golden Rams bested the Lady Dragons in kills 34-20 and every other statistical category.

Against the Lady Panthers, it was an uphill battle for ASU as Claflin held all the momentum after an upset win over LeMoyne-Owen, the #1 seed out of the Western Division. After dropping a close 26-24 decision that put the down two sets to none, the Lady Golden Rams rallied to take the final three sets 25-23, 25-20, 15-7.

Jahkishma Soto anchored the offense with a season high 50 assists behind 18 and 17 kills from Justice Howard and Phillips, respectively. Soto also put up a solo block and three assisted blocks as ASU improves to 5-0 this season in five set matches.
