Lady Rams snap long losing streak with win over CAU

ALBANY, Ga.- Kayla Green's basket with 11 seconds left in regulation proved to be decisive on Monday night. Trailing for most of the contest, ASU was able to rally and defeat Clark Atlanta by the score of 70-69.
 
With the win, the Lady Rams snapped their eight-game losing streak and improves to 2-13 overall and 2-4 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 5-9, 1-5.
 
Albany State appeared to be on its way to a ninth straight loss after the first quarter. ASU allowed Clark Atlanta to freely run its offense and eventually fell behind 31-14 after the first quarter. The Lady Rams' defense improved in the second stanza, and they were able to outscore CAU 18-7 to cut its deficit to 38-32 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, ASU continued to chip away at the Lady Panthers' lead. After the period, the home team trailed only 53-48 to set up an emotional fourth quarter thanks to a basket by Uche Ibebunjo at the buzzer.
 
In the fourth quarter, Albany State continued to generate its comeback. With 1:03 left, Elesha Foster scored a layup to bring the home team within one at 69-68. After a shot clock violation by CAU, Green, who didn't play until the second half, scored her eventual game winner with 11 seconds left and was fouled to give ASU a 70-69 edge.
 
Green missed the ensuing free throw, and the Lady Panthers had an opportunity to win the game. However, a steal in the final seconds by Tyra Thompson sealed the victory for the Lady Rams.
 
Thompson led Albany State with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Green recorded 16 points. Elesha Foster added 12 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams shot 28-of-57 (49.1%) from the field, 3-of-14 (21.4%) from three-point range and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the free throw line.
 
Clark Atlanta was led by Kiyanna Johnson's game-high 19 points. Marrisa Mandeldove netted 16 points, and Nicole Graham added 11 points.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Jan 14 when it hosts Paine College. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
