Lady Rams can’t tame Paine Lady Lions

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's basketball team could not extend its win streak to two games on Saturday afternoon. ASU made an early comeback, but eventually lost to Paine College 68-59 in a key SIAC matchup.
 
With the loss, the Lady Rams are now 2-14 overall and 2-4 in the SIAC. Paine improves to 7-9, 4-4.
 
Albany State found itself behind after the first quarter. Paine capitalized on several turnovers by the home team to build a 21-12 edge. The Lady Rams used the second quarter to make a solid comeback. A basketball by Kayla Green before the halftime buzzer gave ASU a 34-33 lead at intermission.
 
In the third quarter, Albany State went cold from the field. The Lady Lions outscored ASU 21-4 to take a commanding 54-38 lead heading into the fourth period. ASU made a 21-14 run in the final stanza, but it eventually ran out of time.
 
Kayla Green recorded 16 points and five rebounds for Albany State. Elesha Foster added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams shot 20-of-67 (29.9%) from the field, 1-of-5 (20%) from three-point range and 18-of-31 (58.1%) from the free throw line. The team also had 29 turnovers.
 
Tierra Boykin scored a game-high 20 points to lead Paine. Janisha Wilkerson recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds, Chasity Mullins tallied 13 points and eight rebounds, and Tania Ward had 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Lions shot 27-of-75 (36%) from the field, 3-of-11 (27.3%) from three-point range and 11-of-22 (50%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will return to action on Monday, Jan. 16 when it travels to Atlanta, Ga. to face Clark Atlanta University. The Lady Rams won the Jan. 9 meeting 70-69. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
