Golden Rams hold off Claflin to win series

ALBANY, Ga.- Trevor Billings recorded three hits, and Brian Winn struck out four of five batters in the final two innings to lead the Albany State baseball team to a 2-1 victory over the Claflin Panthers. ASU wins the SIAC weekend series and improves to 13-30 overall and 11-4 in league play.
 
The Golden Rams currently sit atop the SIAC East Division standings. Claflin, who is in third place in the division, falls to 18-26, 11-7.
 
Albany State didn't score its first run until the bottom of the third inning. Billings hit a single, and Payton Dixon scored for an early 1-0 lead.
 
In the fifth inning, the two teams generated the rest of the offense for the game. Claflin tied the game at one in the top of the stanza. ASU answered in the bottom of the inning. Theodore Smith's single to right field allowed Billings to go home to make the game 2-1 in favor of the home team.
 
The Golden Rams relied on its field defense and solid pitching from John Paul Barnard and Winn to hold off the Panthers.
 
ASU collected seven hits as a team and committed no errors. Billings was 3-for-4 at the plate. Barnard was the winning pitcher after going seven innings and recording five strikeouts.
 
Albany State will return to action on April 18 when it hosts Benedict College at Golden Rams Park. Monday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
