Lady Rams Softball splits a pair with Claflin

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State women's softball team could only manage a split in their first SIAC series of the season. The Lady Rams defeated the Claflin University Lady Panthers 2-1 in Game 1 before falling 11-5 in the second contest.
 
With the split, ASU now owns a 5-14 overall record and a 1-1 mark in league play. Claflin is now 11-15, 1-1.

ASU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tiffany Massey scored on an error to account for that run. Claflin used the top of the third inning to tie the score at one.
 
The Lady Rams recorded what would become the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ambrionna Atkism hit a single to score Brishanti Weaver to claim the aforementioned 2-1 advantage.
 
Atkism recorded two of the team's three hits. Tiffany Massey picked up the mound win.
 
 
Claflin 11, Albany State 5
 
The Lady Panthers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Albany State answered in the bottom of the third inning. Malea Maye belted a two-run homerun to give the Lady Rams 2-1 edge.
 
The fourth inning is where ASU met its downfall. Claflin scored seven runs in the top of the stanza to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The Lady Panthers added another run in the top of the fifth inning for a 9-2 advantage.
 
Albany State made a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Malea Maye homered again, this time for three runs, to help cut the deficit to 9-2. However, Claflin added two more runs of its own in the top of the sixth inning to seal its win.
 
Maye finished the game with two hits and five RBIs. The Lady Rams collected eight hits and committed four errors. Atkism was the losing pitcher.
 
Albany State returns to action Mar. 17-19 when it travels to Jasper, Alabama to participate in the 2016 SIAC Women's Softball Tournament. The Lady Rams will open the event against SIAC West Division foe Spring Hill College on Mar. 17. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. (central time).
