Lady Rams drop barn burner to archrival Fort Valley State

ALBANY, Ga.- The Albany State Lady Rams experienced a few tough blows in their 65-63 SIAC loss to archrival Fort Valley State. Not only did the team lose its annual homecoming game, but the Lady Wildcats' victory also spoiled the Senior Night for eight Lady Rams.

Worst of all, the defeat also knocked the Lady Rams from their lofty perch in the conference With the loss, ASU, who entered the contest tied for 1st place with Benedict in the league's East Division, falls below .500 at 10-11. The Lady Rams are now 10-3 in the SIAC.

FVSU improves to 8-14, 7-6.

Albany State appeared to be on its way to a huge victory in the first quarter. The Lady Rams played stingy defense and controlled the boards early. ASU spurted to a 16-4 lead by the period's end.

FVSU went on a run of its own in the second stanza. The Lady Wildcats outscored the host school 25-14 to cut the home team's advantage to 30-29 at halftime.

The Lady Rams were able to recapture the lead in the third quarter. Zuri Frost made one of two free throws to give the team a 48-47 edge with 30 seconds left. However, Fort Valley State scored the next four points and took a 51-48 advantage into the fourth quarter.

With 1:20 left in the game, the Lady Wildcats still held a three-point lead at 62-59. Ieshia Young then stole an FVSU pass and went in for a layup to cut ASU's deficit to one with 52 seconds remaining.

Artisha Holston followed Young's defense with some of her own. After picking off another errant pass, Holston was fouled with 32 seconds left in the game. She made both free throws to give Albany State a 63-62 edge.

However, missed free throws and turnovers, which plagued Albany State for most of the game, became more abundant down the stretch. After Frost missed both gratis tosses to that would have put the Lady Rams up by three with 20 seconds left, ASU lost its chance to pull victory from defeat.

With 13 seconds left, FVSU's Daknequa White hit a free throw to tie the game at 63. On Albany State's next possession, the Lady Rams turned the ball over and Iyuna Dugger stole the pass and found Shereba Montgomery for a layup to give the Lady Wildcats a 65-63 edge with three seconds left.

The Lady Rams still had another chance to send the game into overtime. However, another turnover off the inbounds pass sealed ASU's defeat.

Green finished with a team-high 16 points. Holston recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Young added 10 points.

The Lady Rams shot 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field and 5-of-12 (41.7%) from three-point range but were a dismal 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the free throw line. The team also committed 18 turnovers.
