Lady Rams’ comeback negated by Miles College

FAIRFIELD, Ala.- Senior forward Artisha Holston did everything in her power to propel Albany State to a victory Thursday night. However, her game-highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds went for naught. The Lady Rams dropped a 74-69 decision to the Miles College Lady Bears and now fall to 10-12 overall and 10-4 in the SIAC.
 
The Lady Bears, who lost to ASU 63-50 on Jan. 28, improves to 13-10, 8-6.
 
Albany State held an early lead in the first quarter. A pair of free throws by Holston put the Lady Rams ahead 13-10 with 4:34 left in the period. However, ASU still trailed 21-18 after the stanza.
 
After falling behind 36-31 at halftime, the Lady Rams trailed by 11, 44-33, at the 8:35 mark. The team trailed 56-47 heading into the final quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Albany State made a huge rally. A three-point play by Holston cut the Miles' lead to 64-63 with 2:38 left in regulation. Another three-point play by Keidra Green at the 1:20 mark put ASU in front 66-65.
 
However, the Lady Bears got four straight points from Rickeytha Davis to regain the lead at 69-66 with 49 seconds left. Miles was able to hold the Lady Rams off with timely free throws the rest of the way and send the Lady Rams to their second straight loss.
 
Kyasha Wilson added 13 points and six rebounds for ASU. The Lady Rams shot 25-of-68 (36.8%) from the field, 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three-point range and 14-of-17 from the free throw line.
 
Larian Scott led Miles with 19 points, and Torborsha Holley recorded 16 points. Ashley Steger had another 11 points.
 
Albany State will look to regroup when it travels to Tuskegee, Ala. on Saturday, Feb. 13 to face the Tuskegee University Tigerettes. The Lady Rams won the initial meeting 73-40 on Jan. 30. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (central time).
