Holston’s late free throw lifts Lady Rams past Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala.- Artisha Holston's free throw with 52 seconds left in regulation proved to be decisive as the Albany State Lady Rams slipped past Tuskegee University 50-49. The win ends a two-game losing streak and improves the team's overall record to 11-12.
 
The Lady Rams also are 11-4 in the SIAC. With Claflin University's loss to Benedict on Saturday, ASU is in sole possession of second place in the SIAC East Division.
 
Tuskegee falls to 5-18, 4-11.
 
Albany State trailed early in the first quarter. At the end of the period, the Lady Rams were behind 12-11. A pair of free throws by Holston 15 seconds before halftime put ASU ahead 24-22.
 
In the third quarter, Albany State outscored the Tigerettes 10-9 to take a 34-31 edge into the final period. Leading 49-46 with 1:27 remaining in regulation, Tuskegee's Kierra Ward nailed a three-pointer to tie the score at 49.
 
After tying the score, Ward committed the foul to send Holston to the line. Holston missed the first shot but made the second to put her team ahead with 52 seconds left. After the team exchanged turnovers after a timeout, Rachel Brownlee attempted a three-pointer to win the game for Tuskegee, but her shot was off the mark.
 
Holston finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Green Sisters, Keidra and Kayla, added nine points apiece. Kayla Green also added seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Rams shot 19-of-47 (40.4%) from the field, 2-of-16 (12.5%) from three-point range and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
 
Cheyanne Williams and Rachel Brownlee each scored 18 points for the Tigerettes.
 
Albany State will return home on Thursday, February 18 when it hosts Stillman College at ASU HPER Gymnasium. The Lady Rams won the initial meeting 73-65 on Dec. 5. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m
