Golden Rams lose late lead against Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.- After being ousted the day before by Georgia College, the Albany State Golden Rams were able to overcome an early deficit to take a solid lead. However, ASU could not hang on and were bested 12-11 by the home team in a thriller.
 
With the loss, Albany State remains winless on the season (0-8). The Bobcats improve to 2-3 overall.
 
Georgia College used the first two innings to put the Golden Rams in  early arrears. The Bobcats scored a total of four runs in those stanzas to build a 4-0 advantage. The run was highlighted by a three-run second inning.
 
ASU got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Quantico Dodson-Williams scored during a defensive pickoff and cut the Bobcats lead to 4-1. GC scored another run in the bottom of the third and fourth stanzas to build a 6-1 edge.
 
Albany State used the top of the fifth inning to get back into contention. Trevor Billings hit a single up the middle to send Payton Dixon home and cut their deficit to 6-4. Theodore Smith added a single of his own to score Billings and Herron Gardner, and the Golden Rams trailed 6-5.
 
In the sixth inning, ASU was able to get closer. Kelvin Wimbish hit into a sacrifice, and Bryant Prather was able to tie the score at six all. The Bobcats added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead.
 
Albany State exploded offensively in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead. Wimbish belted a single to left field, and Prather and Gardner scored and erased GC's advantage. Wimbish then scored off an error, and the Golden Rams led 8-7.
 
Dixon got into the singles act by hitting one to center field, which allowed Dodson-Williams to score and give the Golden Rams their first lead of the game at 9-7. ASU added two more runs to take an 11-7 advantage into the bottom of the inning.
 
However, Albany State's lead was short-lived. The Bobcats scored five runs in bottom of the eighth to regain the lead at 12-11. The Golden Rams were unable to score in the top of the ninth inning to extend the game.
 
Billings finished the game with three hits and two RBIs. Prather and Dodson-Williams each added two hits. Wimbish recorded three RBIs. Brandon Wollett was the losing pitcher for the Golden Rams, who collected 12 hits on the day, but committed two errors.
 
Albany State and Georgia College will complete the three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 14. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
