Lady Rams drop OT thriller to Georgia Southwestern

FORT VALLEY, Ga.- The Albany State women's basketball team showed improvements, but ASU still did not find the winner's circle. The Lady Rams lost a 64-61 overtime contest to Georgia Southwestern State at the SIAC-Peach Belt Challenge held at Fort Valley State University.
 
With the loss, Albany State falls to 0-4 overall. The Lady Hurricanes improve to 2-1.
 
After the first quarter, Albany State trailed 17-13. ASU only generated eight points in the second period and found itself behind 29-21 at halftime. GSW increased its lead to 43-34 after three stanzas.
 
At the 9:32 mark of the fourth quarter, Georgia Southwestern State built a 45-34 lead. However, Ashley Johnson hit a three-pointer to cap a 14-4 run and cut the deficit to 49-48 with 4:17 left in regulation.
 
The last few minutes of regulation produced some pulsating moments. Trailing 52-48, Johnson hit another three-pointer to cut the deficit to 52-51 at the 3:24 mark. Khayla Owens pushed the Lady Hurricanes' edge back to three, 54-51, with 1:26 remaining. However, Uche Ibebunjo made a basket for Albany State, and the Lady Rams were closing in on GSW at 54-53.
 
With 28 seconds left in the game, Zuri Frost gave Albany State the lead with a jumper, but Shanya Jones a free throw for GSW to tie the game at 55 with 17 seconds left. The Lady Rams had an opportunity get off a final shot in regulation, but Raven Wynn' attempt was off the mark.
 
In the extra session, Albany State led 61-59 with 1:59 left in the game. However, the team went cold the rest of the way. Georgia Southwestern State scored the last five points of the game.
 
Johnson finished the game with12 points for ASU, and Kayla Green added 11 points and six rebounds. Frost and Wynn each had nine points.
 
The Lady Rams shot 23-of-35 (35.4%) from the field, 2-of-13 (15.4) from three-point range and 13-of-31 (41.9%) from the free throw line.
 
Owens led Georgia Southwestern State with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Hurricanes shot 19-of-59 (27.5%) from the field, 4-of-22 (18.2%) from three-point range and 22-of-31 (71%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will return to action when it opens its home schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The Lady Rams will host Georgia College at ASU HPER Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
