Lady Rams drop season opener to Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Albany State women's basketball team opened its 2016-2017 season on the road against an in-state rival. However, the Lady Rams could not find victory, dropping a 76-53 decision to the Valdosta State Lady Blazers. ASU falls to 0-1 on the young season, while VSU improves to 1-0
                        
Albany State fell behind early and had difficulty getting back into contention. ASU trailed 25-10 after the first quarter and 37-21 at halftime.
 
Both teams scored 11 points in the third period, as Valdosta State still led by 16, 48-32, at the end of the stanza. VSU outscored the Lady Rams 28-21 in the fourth quarter.
 
Point guard Zuri Frost recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and three steals to lead Albany State. Elesha Foster added 13 points and six rebounds, and Ciera Norman netted 11 points.
 
The Lady Rams shot 19-of-69 (27.5%) from the field, 3-of-25 (12%) from three-point range and 12-of-20 from the free throw line.
 
Valdosta State was led by Madi Mitchell, who scored a game-high 18 points. Kenya Dixon had 16 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Lady Blazers shot 26-of-67 (38.8%), 4-of-26 (15.4%) from three-point range and 20-of-27 (74.1%) from the free throw line.
 
Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12 when it faces the University of West Florida in Valdosta. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
