Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Lady Rams Volleyball loses heartbreaker to Claflin

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- After rallying to win the first two sets of the match to take a 2-0 lead over SIAC East rival Claflin, Albany State seemed to be on its way to taking the division lead. However, ASU was unable to finish off the Lady Panthers, and ultimately dropped a 3-2 decision.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to second place in the division with a 9-9 overall record and 6-4 league mark. Claflin, a team coached by ASU alumnae and former professor LaTonya Conner, improves to 7-4, 7-3. The Lady Panthers now sit atop the SIAC East standings.

During the first game, Albany State trailed by seven points, 21-14, before scoring eight straight points to seize control. The Lady Rams stayed hot and won the set 25-23. ASU followed the same pattern in the second contest, scoring six straight points after trailing 20-14 and eventually winning 25-22.

However, the Lady Rams could not stop Claflin during rallies of its own. The Lady Panthers were able to win the final three sets by the scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 15-10.

Justice Howard led Albany State with 15 kills, while Keonna Hobbs added 14. Brittianni Phillips had 11 kills and three block assists. Setter Jahkishma Soto recorded 42 assists, and Kiara Thompson (14 digs) and Chelona Holmes (13 digs) led the team defensively.

Albany State will return to SIAC action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when it hosts the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at ASU HPER Gymnasium.
