Lady Rams rally late to defeat Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Artisha Holston's basket with 20 seconds left in regulation fueled a late comeback and lifted the Albany State Lady Rams to a 55-50 win over the Paine College Lady Lions. With the pulsating victory, ASU wins its third straight game and improves to 6-9 overall and 6-1 in the SIAC.

Paine falls to 5-9, 3-5.

In the first quarter, both teams struggled to find offense. Paine took a low-scoring 8-6 lead by the end of the period. The scoring production increased in the second stanza, and the half ended tied at 25.

The third quarter brought more offensive struggles for Albany State. The Lady Rams only scored 11 points and eventually trailed 39-36 heading into the final frame.

Early in the final period, the Lady Rams faced their biggest deficit, 44-36, at the 8:27 mark. Still trailing 50-46 with 1:14 left, ASU appeared to be on its way to its 10th defeat of the season.

However, Keidra Green finally hit her first three-pointer of the night to cut the lead to 50-49 with 28 seconds remaining. Six seconds later, Zuri Frost drew an offensive foul on Paine's Ashley Watts to give the team another possession.

With 20 seconds left, Frost found Holston under the basket for a score, and the Lady Rams took a 51-50 edge. PC missed a shot that would have put them ahead, and Holston grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made both charity shots, and Green added two more to cap the successful comeback.

Holston finished with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Deborah Hoe scored nine points off the bench.

The Lady Rams shot 20-of-61 (32.8%) from the field, 4-of-18 (22.2%) from the three-point range and 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line.

Ashley Watts led the Lady Lions with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Aaliyah Wright added 11 points.

Albany State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host the Clark Atlanta Lady Panthers. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the ASU HPER Gymnasium.
