Golden Rams unable to snap losing streak against Tuskegee

PHENIX CITY, Ala.- Junior running back Jarvis Small rushed for 108 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns, but Albany State could did not find itself in the win column. The Golden Rams fell to 0-2 on the season after losing to the Tuskegee Golden Tigers 27-14 in the 2nd Annual White Water Classic. The Golden Tigers improved to 2-0 overall and have now beaten Albany State in four straight meetings.

In a matchup of the SIAC elite, Tuskegee threw the first major punch at the start of the contest. The Golden Tigers' Dennis Norfleet returned the opening kickoff 82 yards to the Albany State 15-yard line to setup the team's first score. That occurred when Kevin Lacey found Marquel Gardner for a 4-yard pass to take the early lead.

At the 12:00 mark of the second quarter, Tuskegee increased its lead when Jewell Ratliff blocked an Albany State field goal attempt. Ratliff recovered the ball and returned it 73 yards for a touchdown. The Golden Tigers had the momentum and a 14-0 advantage.

ASU would answer with a rally of its own. The Golden Rams went on a 10-play, 75-yard drive in 4:20 that was capped with a 2-yard touchdown by Small with 7:48 left in the second period.
Stefan Whitehead kicked a successful PAT, and Albany State only trailed 14-7.

On Tuskegee's next possession, the Golden Rams received a spark from its "Dirty Blue" Defense.
Kelderion Miller intercepted a Golden Tiger pass and returned it 28 yards to the TU 10-yard line. Two plays later, Small scored his second touchdown from five yards out to help his team tie the game at 14 all. Neither would score again before halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter by both teams, Tuskegee took the lead for good with 10:07 left in the game. Lacey completed a pass to Van Powell, and he produced a 79-yard touchdown to give the Golden Tigers a 20-14 edge. The PAT was blocked by Albany State's
Zavondric Shingleton.

With 5:50 left in regulation, Albany State had a final chance to win the game and snap its losing streak against the Golden Tigers. Driving from its own 35-yard line, the ASU surge was sparked by 17- and 11-yard receptions by
Quadrey Simmons. Albany State made it to the TU 10-yard line, but Ricky Norris intercepted Caleb Edmonds' pass and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown and put the game out of reach for the Golden Rams.

Simmons finished with nine receptions and a career-high 117 yards. Edmonds was 19-of-41 passing for 178 yards with three interceptions. ASU recorded 293 yards of total offense.

Defensively,
Tavarius Washington and Jamal Abd Al-Qadir led the Golden Rams with 3.5 tackles apiece. Washington also had a sack for a loss of a yard.

Albany State will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when it hosts the Stillman College Tigers in an SIAC showdown. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Albany State University Coliseum.

The ASU Department of Athletics will also observe Military Appreciation, Take-a-Kid-to-a-Game, and Greek Day.
