Golden Rams stun Claflin in SIAC doubleheader

Orangeburg, S. C.- After dropping two of three games to Claflin University in March in Albany, the Albany State Golden Rams defeated the Panthers in a doubleheader by the scores of 9-1 and 5-4. With the wins, ASU, who is currently in fourth place in the SIAC East Division, improves to 15-28 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC. Claflin, the SIAC East's top team, falls to 15-26, 11-6.

Game 1: Albany State 9, Claflin 1

Albany State opened the contest in strong fashion. Terrance Worthy singled to score Emmanuel Santos for a 1-0 lead. With the bases loaded, both Jeremy Arrington and Sable Gilliard were hit by pitches to send Allen Hardy and Worthy home. Reise McDaniel hit a single to score Hector Carrasquillo, and the Golden Rams led 4-0 after the top of the first inning. Claflin scored a run in the bottom of the stanza to trail 4-1.

In the second inning, Santos opened with a homerun to give ASU a 5-0 edge. After a Worthy double and a Panther error put Carrasquillo on base, Arrington smashed a single to send Worthy to home plate. Carrasquillo added another run, and McDaniel brought Arrington in to provide Albany State with an 8-0 advantage.

Carrasquillo and Hardy combined in the third inning to score Albany State's final run when Carrasquillo's single scored Hardy.

Worthy and McDaniel each had three hits to lead the Golden Rams. McDaniel also had two RBIs. Santos and Hardy added two hits apiece. Cullen Coulter (4-6) was the winning pitcher.

McDaniel later scored off a Panther error, and Santos' single scored Ryan Later. Albany State led 4-1 after the inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Golden Rams went ahead 5-1 after McDaniel sacrificed for Jonatan Galan to score. Claflin made a rally in the bottom of the inning with three runs of its own, but it could not overtake Albany State.

McDaniel and Worthy once again led the Golden Rams offensively. The former recorded two hits and with three RBIs, and the latter added two hits. Pitcher John Paul Bernard (3-4) picked up the mound win.
