Lady Rams Softball defeats Benedict

Albany, GA- Sophomore Malea Maye collected three hits and three RBIs to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 13-5 win over the Benedict College Lady Tigers. With the win, ASU wins its first game of the season and improves to 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 3-9, 0-1.
 
Benedict opened the scoring when Jasmine Sledge hit a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning. Albany State answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. Toni Coleman belted a grand slam to give the Lady Rams a 4-3 advantage.
 
In the second inning, ASU increased its lead to 5-3 after Bristanti Weaver came home thanks to a Lady Tiger error. The Lady Rams didn't score again until the fifth inning when they exploded for five runs to take a 10-3 edge. Maye's triple highlighted the inning by knocking in three runs.
 
The Lady Tigers got homers from Sledge and Kelsey James to cut its deficit to 10-5 after the top of the sixth inning. However, ASU scored three more runs in the same inning to end the game due to its eight-run lead after five innings.
 
Coleman led the team in RBIs with four and Alexa Lopez added two hits and was also the winning pitcher. Bristanti Weaver recorded two RBIs.
 
Albany State returns to action on Sunday, March 1 when they host Benedict in a doubleheader. The games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
