Lady Rams get revenge against Benedict in OT thriller

Albany, GA- Point guard Mecca Frost nearly recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 76-69 overtime victory over the Benedict Lady Tigers, the SIAC's top team. With the win, ASU improves to 11-9 overall and 10-3 in the SIAC. Benedict falls to 16-5, 11-2.

The two teams renewed their rivalry by putting their respective defensive clamps on each other. The two teams were only tied at seven at the 13:52 mark of the first half before the Lady Tigers used a 9-2 run to take an 18-9 lead with 9:10 left in the stanza.

The Lady Rams continued to have trouble finding the basket.  Thanks to its defense, ASU was able to close its deficit to 25-20 at halftime.

In the second half, Albany State continued to trail until Keidra Green made two free throws to put the team up 36-35 at the 12:32 mark. Benedict regained the lead, 42-41, with a three-pointer three minutes later.

With 5:07 left in regulation, the Lady Tigers' Dorothy Brown hit a trey to give BC a 51-48 lead, but Kyasha Wilson answered with a three-pointer of her own on the Lady Rams' next possession to tie the score at 51. Brown gave BC a 53-51 lead with another jumper, only to see Wilson come back and nail a jump shot in the lane to tie score again at 53 all.

With 1:04 left in regulation, Benedict led 62-60, and the Lady Rams had several chances to tie the game, but could not connect. Benedict had a chance to put the game away from the free throw line with four seconds remaining, but Carissa Shropshire missed both to provide the Albany State with another chance. Zuri Frost dribbled up the court and was fouled with 0:00.3 seconds left on the game clock. She made both free throws to send the game into overtime.

The extra session was dominated by ASU. The Lady Rams grabbed the lead in the beginning and never relinquished it. Mecca Frost, who was 12-for-12 from the charity stripe, hit two more with three seconds left to close out the scoring.

Ieshia Young finished with 14 points and four steals for Albany State. Wilson had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Green added 10 points. Artisha Holston recorded a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with her seven points.

The Lady Rams shot 18-for-69 (26.1%) from the field, one-for-eight (12.5%) from three-point range, and 39-for-50 (78%) from the free throw line. The team forced Benedict into 24 turnovers and held it to 30.4% shooting from the field.

Albany State returns to action on Monday, February 9 when they host the Paine College Lady Lions at the ASU HPER Gymnasium. The Lady Rams won the initial meeting 76-51 in Augusta, Georgia earlier this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
