Golden Rams drops close contest to Paine

Albany, GA- Darshtyn Baker scored a game-high 22 points, but the Albany State Golden Rams dropped an 82-78 decision to the Paine College Lions, the SIAC's top team. With the win, ASU falls to 8-14 overall and 4-11 in the SIAC. Paine improves to 17-5, 13-2.

With starters Demetri Wheeler and Earl Farnum sidelined due to injuries, the Golden Rams played inspired in their absence. Led by Baker's hot start, ASU built a 22-11 lead in the opening minutes. Paine was able to cut into the lead and tied the Golden Rams on several occasions. The two teams were tied at 38 all at intermission.

In the second half, the two teams continued to battle through ties and lead changes. Albany State regained the lead, 63-61, when Lance Dixon made a pair of free throws. Denzel Dillingham put Paine back in front 64-63 with a three-pointer at the 8:23 mark.

Tied at 64, Baker's layup gave the Golden Rams a 66-64 advantage with 6:59 left in regulation. Paine's Patrick Petty answered with a trey for 67-66 lead. Albany State did cut the lead to one again, 78-77, with nine seconds left, but the Lions made some clutch free throws down the stretch to hold off the home team.
