Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Rams Basketball falls in season opener to Georgia Southwestern

COLUMBUS, Ga.- Junior forward Artisha Holston recorded 22 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, but the Albany State Lady Rams were unable to gain victory in their first game of the season. ASU dropped a 67-54 decision to the Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes in the 2015 Peach Belt-SIAC Challenge, which was hosted by Columbus State University.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter. Turnovers by both team created an early low-scoring duel, and GSW took an early 12-7 lead at the end of the period. In the second stanza, the Lady Rams used a 19-16 to cut its deficit to 28-26 at halftime.

In the third stanza, turnovers continued to plague Albany State. With the Lady Rams trailing only 38-35 with 4:02 left, the Lady Hurricanes took advantage of ASU's miscues to end the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 52-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Georgia Southwestern built its advantage to 21 points, 62-41, in the final period. The Lady Rams did make a run to get back into contention, but they could only get closer than the final score.

Senior guard Ieshia Young added nine points, and Sierra Foster had another eight. The Lady Rams shot 42.6 percent from the field, 14.3 percent from three-point range and 61.9 percent from the free throw line.  The team recorded 10 steals, but also committed 32 turnovers.

Georgia Southwestern was led by Jasmine McSwain, who netted a team-high 16 points.
